Motorcycle documentary “Fifty Years of Kicks” to be released online

•20 min video documentary profiling two experienced motorcycle riders

•Will be released online free Thursday 12th April 2012 at motojournalism.com

•Trailer and HTML embed code available at http://youtu.be/HroBE2VrkiA

Fifty Years of Kicks is a 20 minute video documentary featuring two experienced motorcycle riders who continue to do what they love despite age and health issues.

There are plenty of videos focusing on teenagers and young adults, pushing their sport to the limit.  With Fifty Years of Kicks, we want to show older adults pushing their bodies to the limit.  Instead of being inspired by the exploits of 18 year olds in extreme sports no longer within our grasp, we find ourselves being inspired by older people participating in activities typically reserved for the young. Rather than lamenting, “I wish I could have tried that when I was young”, we want to say, “I want to be like them when I grow up!”

Fifty Years of Kicks, is a collaboration between Motojournalism and Traction off-road e-rag, and is our first attempt at video production. The documentary was shot in a true “beg, borrow or steal” manner. The video and sound equipment used to film it was substandard, but generously loaned by colleagues and friends. The subjects and location owners were very accommodating with their limited time.

We would like to continue to produce episodes profiling the interesting characters in and around motorcycling and are looking for sponsors to make that possible. We want to tell the stories of the people who participate, the reasons why these people engage in a sport with inherent risks and dangers, and why they can’t live without these two wheeled machines.

Tuareg Rally 2012

The Tuareg Rally is underway much to the delight of anxious rally fans starving for desert action  since the end of the Dakar. Seven days or pure Moroccan malaise are on order for the uninitiated or those perhaps lulled into a sense that a “smaller” rally may be an easier rally. Difficulties aside, Where other rallies are seeing support dropped or are being cancelled altogether, it is great to see the preparations take place and the first serious stage underway.

Scrutineering took place yesterday in Almeria, Spain before the competitors boarded the ferry for the evening voyage to Nador, Morocco only to hop right into the competition with a 390 kilometer stage on the way to the nights bivouac in Missor. Along the way are lush forests and technical track where navigation demands the utmost attention.

Information is sparse, but I will do my best to keep on top of things as they emerge.

Calendar:
Day 0: Almeria Scrutineering
Day 1: Nador to Missor 390km
Day 2: Missor to Merzouga 340km
Day 3: Merzouga to Merzouga 230km
Day 4: Merzouga to Merzouga - Kingstage 280km
Day 5: Merzouga to Merzouga - Dune Race 80km
Day 6: Merzouga to Missor 400km
Day 7: Missor to Nador 400km
Day 8: Back to Spain 110km

On a Shoestring and a Prayer

Interpreted comments from a member of Team Giofil Aprilia about their participation in the Dakar 2012.

Aprilia had the best start to the Dakar with a win on Stage 1, but the results were not what we expected. When Francisco Lopez came to Chile he was still a few minutes from the podium and intended to attack on his favorite soil, but he hurt his knee and had to retire. In addition, we had several examples of how the team seemed in disarray. Julius Fantoni, was drafted in as Team Manager in place of Philip Assirelli who was absent because of personal problems. His words are clear about what happened.

“The rumors are exaggerated because different facts were over-inflated or interpreted incorrectly. It is true that we had no money, but we had a temporary problem with a credit card. It is true that Lopez had to pay for his entry in the race and then the A.S.O. has pointed out that we were 10% short of the total amount. Philip Assirelli was always reachable by phone and paid the difference. As for the mechanics having to sleep in a tent even in Mar del Plata, it is true but only because they had arrived at three in the morning and did not want to go to the hotel. The next day we were all at the hotel.”

Unfortunately for Chaleco Lopez, after a win on Stage 1, it was all downhill from there.

Grabham teams up with Husaberg for AORC attack

After mixed results at the 2012 Dakar rally with David Schwarz (43rd), Ronnie Bodinger (71st) and Rod Faggotter (dnf) the Husaberg Rally Team nevertheless achieved a first ever Husaberg Dakar finish !

The team is now very focused on the domestic Australian rally racing season. Heading up the team will be Damien Grabham joined by David Schwarz, Mick Heuchan and Sam Sunderland at selected events.

On board his FE570 Damien put in a very strong season during 2011 with outright wins at the Quit Forest RallyMoto and Yilgarn Rally, 2nd outright at Condo 750 rally and 4th outright in the Australasian Safari along with E3 class wins at all four of those events.

First up will be the Quit Forest RallyMoto where Damien will be pitting his FE570 up against his KTM mounted brother Ben Grabham for outright honors, while Mick Heuchan will be looking to take advantage of any mistakes the two brothers make in their Husaberg vs KTM duel !! Mick has an axe to grind here after posting 2nd outright in both 2010 and 2011, he is not keen on the bridesmaid role and is determined to use his ex-roadracing and supermotard racing skills to give him an edge on the slippery pea gravel WRC style stages.

Only a week later Damien will be heading out to Condobolin for the Condo 750 over the Easter weekend to put the challenge again to the two Smith brothers and back to back winner Rod Faggotter. Last year after mechanical issues for Jacob and Todd Smith put the two top Hondas out of contention, the title fight was soon locked into a battle between Damien and 2010 Condo 750 winner Rod Faggotter on his Yamaha WR450. At the end of Day 1 after five Special stages and 225 km of racing, Rod Faggotter was leading by 6 minutes. Going into Day 2 Damien used the best of his FE570 to pass Faggotter and build a gap. While leading on the road a collision with a kangaroo resulted in a big crash and injury & bike damage, however Damien was able to recover and consolidate his 2nd Outright position by the final stage.

In May the Yilgarn Rallye runs over very similar tracks and terrain to the Safari and provides an ideal testing and training event for the Safari itself. Last year Matt Fish pushed hard on his KTM 530 EXC taking pole in the prologue to lead the field at the start of the first Special, a grueling 234km loop out from Mt Walton towards Menzies and back. However hesitation with the navigation at Musson Soak allowed Damien Grabham to take the lead, open up a 12 minute gap. With Damien leading out on the start of Leg 2 Fish managed to close up within striking range but Damien turned up the wick forcing Fish to try for a pass or settle for 2nd. Unfortunately for him passing at speed in the dust is a risky business and after having a decent off and getting banged up a fair bit his team decided discretion was the better part of valor and Fish retired for the day.

Damien is looking to build on his in excellent 2011 form in the lead up to the 2012 Australasian Safari in late September. Along with regular Safari top 5 placer and 3 time Dakar rally finisher David Schwarz, Damien and David will lead the 2012 Australasian Safari Husaberg Rally Racing team. Guest rider will again be UAE based British ex-pat Sam Sunderland. Sam has shown super fast speed at both the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and the Dakar but has been let down by mechanical issues that haven’t allowed him to take the challenge to the front runners. For the 2012 Safari the team will work hard to make sure that he only needs to stay out of the way of any stray kangaroos. David Schwarz will be fronting up for his 10th consecutive Safari start, as many have said he is a “rally machine” and will be pushing for yet another class win.

A.S.O. Drops Support for Silk Way Rally in 2012

Translation of A.S.O. communication:

After three years of collaboration between the A.S.O. and Russian organizers, the next edition of the Silk Way Rally to be held from July 7 to 13 will not benefit from the support of the organization teams of the Dakar or Dakar Series label.

Indeed, for cyclical reasons, both parties could not reach agreement for the 2012 edition.

Acknowledging this situation, they prefer to put their collaboration on hold for this year and pledged to work together on a model of cooperation for years to come.

The A.S.O. extends to those teams that are participating in this great adventure, good wishes for the 2012 edition of the Silk Way Rally.

During 30 years, the Rally of Tunisia has become a reference of the cross-country rally calendar.

Organized by the professional and experienced teams of NPO in partnership with Tunisian Ministries, “The Tunisia” has become one of the main international cross-country rallies for all champions and a school of the desert for a lot of amateurs.

Our Tunisian friends living in the south of Tunisia will not see the rally or receive its humanitarian help this year.

Gordon Excluded from 2012 Dakar

While nothing is yet posted on the FIA’s official site, campeonesnet.com.ar is confirming that Robby Gordon was indeed excluded from the 2012 Dakar as a result of a technical infraction.

From www.campeonesnet.com.ar: It was confirmed that the pilot lost Hummer had achieved fifth place in the overall standings by abnormalities in the motor. Thus, Argentina’s Lucio Alvarez was elevated to the fifth spot overall.

Finally Robby Gordon was excluded from the Dakar 2012, which was confirmed after analysis by the FIA that found anomalies in the engine performance of the Hummer.

After the ninth stage of the Dakar was learned that the car driven by Robby Gordon was out of competition. The statement issued by the organization at that time read: “After the ninth stage of the Dakar, the curators have found a technical non-compliance of vehicle 303 (Article 1P and 3P technical regulation) necessitating College of Commissioners to exclude Gordon from the rally.”

Gordon appealed this decision and continued racing under this appeal eventually finishing in fifth place. However, with his exclusion, Argentine Toyota driver, Lucio Alvarez assumes that position.

Boano Factory Builds Beta RR 450 Atacama Rally

24-Feb-2012 | Christopher Doyle

Developed by Boano Moto the Beta RR 450 Atacama Rally is ready for rally

The 2012 Dakar recently ended, but it is already time to start preparing for the 2013 edition. In doing so, Boano Motorcycles, always having been interested in producing an in house bike, under the guidance of engineer Rignano Arno, has crafted a beauty ready to tackle the most grueling of rallies, introducing, the Boano Beta RR 450 Atacama Rally.

The “heart” is Italian, the chassis is Italian, and all the superstructures that transform the RR 450 into a complete and competitive rally platform are Italian. The project began life back in March 2010 as simply the Beta Rally and through various evolutions of development has arrived in its third incarnation as a marvel of a bike.

Fundamental input has comes from the experiences the Family Boano, Roberto, Jarno as well as Ivan, the youngest of the family. In addition to having designed and built the bike, Ivan led the 2010 Pharaohs Rally and raced an earlier evolution in the 2011 Dakar.

Borne of these experiences is the Boano Beta RR 450 Atacama Rally 2013, codenamed Type D-03, an agile and very compact design despite a total fuel capacity of 35 liters. The 450cc Beta engine has been revised in collaboration with factory for higher performance without decreasing reliability. The airbox and air filter have been redesigned and repositioned with the filter in a horizontal position at the center of the seat. This allows better, cleaner intake and increased performance even in the toughest, dustiest conditions.

Every detail has been designed for maximum performance and reliability but minimum size and weight. Describing this evolution, Jarno Boano says, “This bike culminates thirty years of off-road experience through six Dakar’s, fifteen Six Days Endures, six Italian championships, four European championships, two World Junior Team trophies, and one World trophy. This experience and passion are the foundation of our work and this weapon to challenge is the results. This bike has been prepared in every detail to be adaptable to both the rider looking to be competitive as well as the rider simply looking to complete his adventure”.

Leading the charge atop the Boano Beta RR 450 Atacama Rally for the 2012 FIM Cross Country World Championship and the 2013 Dakar Rally will be Luca Manca, fully fit and recuperated after the terrible accident suffered in the 2010 Dakar.

The made to measure Boano Beta RR 450 Atacama Rally is ready now and will be assembled to order. The Boano Factory offers potential customers the opportunity to test the bike before finalizing the purchase.

Brits Rule at Hell’s Gate

And Jarvis takes it again…

British rider Graham Jarvis snatched first spot reaching the top of Hell’s Peak for the second year in a row just a week after taking the win at another extreme enduro, King of the Motos. After all but dominating the earlier elimination rounds and starting from pole position in the night race, first time Hell’s Gate competitor and KTM team rider, Jonny Walker arrived in the runner up spot after a small mistake on the first lap allowed Jarvis to take the lead, a lead he would hold until the finish for his second Hell’s Gate win in a row for Husaberg.

Walker pips the holeshot from Jarvis and Alessandro Botturi

Jarvis has the form for winning

Xavi Galindo finished third with the lone American in the race, Cody Webb coming home in fourth on his Beta, making quite a name for himself as a rider to watch when the going gets tough.

Jarvis, Walker, Galindo, 1st, 2nd, 3rd

In this, the ninth running of Hell’s Gate, British riders have claimed the top spot on the podium in seven out of the nine editions. Only Polish sensation Taddy Blazusiak has been able to take the win away from the British riders on two occasions. Jarvis remains the man to beat. Well done.

Bordone-Ferrari to Hell’s Gate

17-Feb-2012 | Christopher Doyle

Today begins the prologue for the ninth edition of what is billed as one of the toughest enduro races on the planet. Fabio Fasola’s Hell’s Gate enduro, held in Italy, has gained a reputation of difficulty placing it alongside the Erzberg Rodeo and Romaniac’s races on the main stage of extreme enduro’s.

Having competed in all eight previous Hell’s Gate races including a second place finish in 2009, Italian rider Alessandro Botturi planned to race yet again for a ninth time as a privateer entrant, but a surprising late entrance of the entire Bordone-Ferrari team displays a showing of team support not often seen.

When I say the Bordone-Ferrari team, I mean the entire group including the riders from both the enduro and the rally teams. That’s right, Botturi will line up alongside Jordi Viladoms, Gerard Farres Guell, and Paolo Ceci from the rally team as well as the rest of the enduro team consisting of Edoardo D’Ambrosio, Jonathan Manzi, Thomas Oldrati, and Massimo Mutti. This certainly puts forth a formidable effort and makes Bordone-Ferrari the team to beat.

Hell’s Gate however, is mostly an individual effort with a scant few actually reaching the finish. There is nothing easy about this race and with more and more extreme events creating a crop of ‘extreme’ race specialists honing their skills like specialized craftsmen, Alessandro Botturi will have his work cut out for him, but in his ninth try, certainly he knows what to expect and has been concentrating on this effort. The support of his entire team can only help to ease the tension.

While many questions have been asked as to whether or not the race would be held due to the recent weather conditions throughout Europe, organizer Fabio Fasola has put to rest any concerns stating that the course conditions are getting ‘better and better’.

Hell’s Gate 2012

Graham Jarvis, winner, Hell’s Gate 2011

During its past eight editions, Hell’s Gate has highlighted the “Extreme Factor” of some riders, who made the  history of Enduro riding. David Knight has won three times, Taddy Blazusiak two. Both the KTM official riders have then diversified their careers: the English giant has aimed to the traditional Enduro and the Polish man has addressed himself to the United States and Indoor Races. In the meanwhile, other World-Beaters  have left their significant mark on the Extreme Races, “revealing” their particular aptitudes and certifying themselves at the front desk of Hell’s Gate. The best known examples: Graham Jarvis, Husaberg, who won the 2011 edition, and Dougie Lampkin, Gas Gas, who won the 2010 edition.

The 2012 edition of Hell’s Gate presents itself once again as “The Challenge” by definition of the “Extreme Elite” and sets the “scary” challenge between the most qualified aces of the moment: Jarvis and Lampkin. The two British riders were the only two able, backward to the last two years, to climb the Hell’s Peak. For them, winning the Hell’s Gate 2012 means settling accounts and get the season pass for the Olympus – sorry, for the Hell – of the Extreme Enduro races: Hell’s Gate is the forerunner and the most representative “circle”.

But we do not believe that this year Hell’s Gate Battle will be limited to the two leading actors of the last two editions. KTM, in fact, is “sharpening” a new “weapon” to face this kind of exciting races. As if on purpose, here is another English man, Jonny Walker. Apart from the obvious “alcoholic” joke, we tell you that Jonny, twenty years old, from Keswick, Cumbria, UK, has been a trialist, and came to enduro riding only three years ago, with a second hand KTM. Fourth in E3 category at the Finnish Six Days, third at the Erzberg 2011 and second overall in the World Indoor just awarded. This year Walker will be a KTM Supported Enduro Rider and he will be racing at the more important Extreme Races. Starting, of course, from the Hell’s Gate.

Over one hundred riders at Hell’s Gate 2012. For many of them ‘HsG’ is a must, the occasion not to be missed whatever the result will be; for others it is an important goal. Who knows, it may be a rookie, a surprise to write his name in gold-book of Fabio Fasola’s Extreme. For example, why do not to wish to the little-known Hemingway brothers, Ben and Daniel, British, too, to enter the elite of the “Extreme Enduro”?

The 9th edition of the Fabio Fasola’s Hell is now ready. What changes and… what does not.

With the passing of time, Fabio Fasola’s Hell has changed, with some new aspects that improbe the shape of the event, more and more followed and exciting, but that didn’t change the basis that could soften the pity. Damned! Whenever did you see a Hell turn  into a Purgatory?

The burning heart of Hell’s Gate still stands as an extreme and selective challenge and so will be also for the ninth edition.

The best riders in the world have already proved that Hell can be won, with sacrifice, effort and talent, and only a few, normally the most “qualified”, could write their names down on a Gold Book that is not only the register of an enduro discipline, but a real pass for the History of Enduro.

Knight, Braybrook, Blazusiak, Lampkin, Jarvis are all great champions that gained their universal fame also to the fact that they had Hell’s Gate among their successes.

In 2012 a new challenge takes place into…Paradise of Ciocco, the unequalled scenery for the creation of an event without compromises.

“Nucleo” and details: the Trophy of Hell’s Gate will be given again after a track of five laps that will be only a little changed in order to empathize the technical aspects of the race.

The qualification phase in the morning will be changed on a technical level and be shaped to be easier also for the “passionate” which are an always growing part of the participants to the Hell’s Gate. Based on the modern enduro, the elimination phase will be easier in order to shape the selection on a more technical basis and not only power. This solution could open the doors of Hell’s Gate to a new name, a new talent or an “old lion” that still has something to say about it.

Again more changes for Hell’s Gate 2012, this time linked to the “Happening” still representative for all the passionate that each year climb up to the mountains of Ciocco to take part to the party. But we still have time to talk about that later, of course we need to keep up with some suspense.

Well, did he or didn’t he? Part II. The Saga Continues…

In a follow up to my posting on Friday, “Well, did he or didn’t he?”, regarding Quinn Cody’s departure from the crack JCR Honda squad, well, it looks as though he did.

Look for an announcement soon and look for that to be a jump to the factory KTM squad. The capacity of that jump and whether or not it entails any Dakar duties remains to be seen. Speculation is that KTM is keen for a big push in US offroad racing.

What also remains to be seen is a mysterious post from Jonah Street a while back regarding a big opportunity in the making. It is quite well known that Jonah was offered a ride with the KTM factory after his Dakar debut with Team Rally Pan Am and that he turned it down out of loyalty to the team that so believed in him and in order to chase what ultimately became an elusive win with TRPA, but only time will tell if the two opportunities have anything to do with each other.

Well, did he or didn’t he?

Rampant speculation shaking the US offroad world is that JCR Honda rider Quinn Cody has left the team and moved to KTM. Seen here at yesterday’s King of the Motos event, Cody is seen speaking with KTM offroad’s Antti Kallonen.

From yesterday, Enduro360 speculated, “I see on Facebook that today was the JCR Honda team photo shoot day. It was also the King of the Motos event. I guess you can’t be two places at the same time. Or maybe there is something more to see here? In the hoodie is KTM offroad boss Antti Kallonen.”

Scotty Breauxman reports, “Shake-Up in the 2012 SCORE Series? Quinn Cody bailed JCR HONDA and appears to be signing up with KTM for a few reasons, including a chance to get a DAKAR ride. We’ve did a little dumpster digging and came up with this photo from yesterday at KING OF THE MOTOS.”

Photo via Enduro360

Follow up comments seem pretty certain that this shakeup is the case, at least until Cody himself commented, “Gotta love the fourm experts and self proclaimed journalists………” Not a denial or a confirmation but just the right amount of ambiguity to keep us guessing.

I’m sure I’m not the only one that would like to see Quinn Cody tearing up South America on a factory KTM 450RR.

Sealine Cross Country Rally

QMMF announces Sealine cross-country rally

Nasser Khalifa al-Attiyah flags Sheikh Suhail Bin Khalifa al-Maktoum from start of 2011 Qatar International Baja The new-look Sealine Cross-Country Rally, organized by the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF), will play host to the third round of this year’s FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies and round two of the six-event FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship on April 15th-21st.

The two-day event is open to cars in the T1, T2, T3 and 2WD categories, trucks in the T4 class, motorcycles and quads and takes its place in the full FIA World Cup calendar for the first time on the back of the successful Baja candidate event that ran in November 2011.

The brainchild of Nasser Khalifa al-Attiyah, president of the QMMF, the Sealine Cross-Country Rally has been extended from two days to five and three key appointments have strengthened al-Attiyah’s team.

“It was important that we got the candidate event under our belts last year and were able to see where improvements could be made and how we could extend the event to cater for the requirements of a full cross-country rally,” said al-Attiyah. “I am delighted to announce new additions to our team. We are all looking forward to running a full FIA World Cup event in Qatar for the first time.” Former co-driver and international event consultant Fred Gallagher has been appointed as event director and will work alongside the experienced Portuguese duo of Pedro Almeida and Jaime Santos.

Almeida is the clerk of the course of the Rally of Portugal and steps into a similar role in Qatar, while Santos – who has considerable experience of Baja-type events in Portugal – will be responsible for routes and mapping.

“I visited Qatar for the first time since 1986 during the recent Qatar International Rally and thoroughly enjoyed the rally,” said event director Fred Gallagher. “The first time I was there, Björn Waldegård and I won the Middle East championship round and it was great to be back. I was surprised by the variety of tracks Qatar has in its deserts and this bodes well for devising challenging events in the future.

“Under the presidency of Nasser Khalifa al-Attiyah, cross-country events are going from strength to strength and several countries have expressed an interest in joining the FIA calendar. The Qatar event promises to be one of the most challenging in the championship and has put the Middle East at the forefront of the cross-country rallying discipline.” The FIM section of the event for motorcycles and quads will run under clerk of the course Iain Black and deputy clerk of the course Rashid al-Sulaiti.

Regulations and full entry details are now available from www.qmmf.com. Entries close at the reduced rate on Monday, February 27th, with the final entry cut-off set for Monday, March 26th. Administration checks and scrutineering for GCC and Qatar crews will be carried out on Sunday, April 15th and international teams will pass their checks on Monday, April 16th, prior to the ceremonial start in the afternoon.

There will be a timed super special stage on Tuesday, April 17th and the first of four desert legs of the new Sealine Cross-Country Rally begins on Wednesday, April 18th. Action draws to a close on Saturday, April 21st.

2012 King of the Motos Extreme Enduro

Jarvis Wins Again…

09-Feb-2012 | Christopher Doyle

Britain’s Graham Jarvis once again showed he is the man to beat when it comes to extreme enduro events. Today’s King of the Motos race was the realization of a dream for Dirt Rider editor Jimmy Lewis. From Dakar to the ISDE, from Baja to Dubai, Jimmy’s been there and done that, so when he set his sights on creating a world class, invitation only, winner take all event to be considered in the same vein of Erzberg, Roof of Africa, and the Tough One, a U.S. version of one of the toughest enduro races, there was little doubt that this day would come.

Once more, unto the breach…

Riders comments will dictate the extent to which Lewis’ dream was successful in creating one of the world’s toughest courses, but there is no doubt the event would come to fruition and will be a success for the future.

Twenty one invited riders lined up to take on the challenge. #66, Kurt Caselli grabbed the hole shot but it was #17, Kyle Redmond that led the greater portion up until the bitter end where it was reported that he lost his way in the final few miles. Graham Jarvis capitalized on this to take the win and with it, the $10,000 prize. Kyle Redmond was still smiling with a 2nd place finish and the final step of the podium was occupied by Destry Abbott.
